Time to Prepare: 15 minutes Cook Time: 30 minutes Serving: 4-6 People
Ingredients
1 lb. bratwurst (4-6 sausages)
2 medium yellow onion,s sliced into wedges
Two 12 oz. beers (preferably lager or ale such as Stella or Miller Lite)
For Serving:
Hoagie buns, brioche buns, hot dog buns or buns of your choice
Dijonnaise (1 teaspoon Dijon Mustard and ½ cup Mayonnaise)
8 oz. sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
Cooking Method
Marinate the brats: In a deep air-tight container, add the bratwurst sausages, sliced onion and beer. Seal tight and swirl to combine. Marinate for 12 hours.
Prepare Zone Grilling: On one side of your grill, create a zone for direct high heat and another for direct low heat on the other side. If you are using a gas grill, allow 15 minutes to preheat before grilling and 30 minutes of preheating time for a charcoal grill.
Boil the brats: Transfer your brats (along with the onions and beer) into a cast iron skillet or Dutch Oven. Place the skillet or Dutch oven directly on the grill (over the low heat zone), close the BBQ cover and bring to a boil. Once boiling, boil for about 10-12 minutes or until they reach an internal temperature of about 145 Degrees F. This step could also be done on the stovetop.
Char Broil the brats: Once boiled, use tongs to transfer the brats (only) directly onto the grill grates of the other side of the grill (high heat zone). Lower heat to medium and grill 2-3 minutes per side until charred and internal temperature reaches 160 degrees F.
Assemble: You can toast the buns on the grill as well. Then place the brats on the buns, topped with the beer-braised onions (from the marinade), cheddar and dijonnaise! Enjoy!
HELPFUL TIPS
Bratwurst is a type of pork sausage but you can use another sausage of your choice! Make sure to allow time for brats to marinade (12 hours prior to grilling) and to allow time for the grill to preheat (see step 2).
